Maryland Man Faces 30-Year Sentence for $54M Crypto Exchange Hack
A Maryland man has been indicted for stealing over $54 million from Uranium Finance, a defunct crypto exchange on the BNB blockchain. Jonathan Spalletta allegedly spent a significant portion of the stolen funds on collectibles, including Pokémon cards, antique Roman coins, and a fragment of the Wright brothers' plane.
The charges stem from two April 2021 exploits targeting Uranium Finance, which collapsed after losing tens of millions in user funds. U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton emphasized that crypto theft carries the same consequences as traditional financial crimes: "For the victims, there is nothing different about having your money taken."
Spalletta faces up to 30 years for computer fraud and money laundering. The case highlights persistent security vulnerabilities in decentralized finance platforms, even as the industry matures.
